Some of us who have begun to take an interest in hemp extracts might be wondering how CBD and hemp may affect sleep. Would it make me sleep too much, due to its often calming properties, or could it help if I have insomnia?

While nearly all of us have had sleeplessness, which only lasts one or two nights; insomnia is much worse, where sufferers regularly have three or more sleepless nights weekly.

It affects one billion people worldwide. It’s estimated that half of seniors are affected. You may believe that you are just tired and cranky, but this problem might also raise the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes.

While many cases of insomnia still don’t have any known cause, the number one known trigger is stress. In a study of people with Social Anxiety Disorder, therapy with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort whilst raising alertness. Compared to people without anxiety, individuals had no real differences in discomfort, alertness, impairment or negative self-statements.

Some medicines, depending on the individual, can also aid sleep. These include lemon balm, valerian and chamomile. But when those don’t provide enough positive changes, the most frequent next step is to reach for prescription pharmaceuticals.

Although they are popular, a study by the National Institutes for Health found that sleeping pills add 11 minutes only to sleep on average, although they do seem to shorten the time it takes to get to sleep. They can also have serious side effects, sending people to the emergency room, especially in cases of Infection. Some, like the benzodiazepine class (e.g. Valium), are highly addictive and can kill.

In 2013, benzodiazepines caused 30 percent of lethal drug overdoses in the USA.

In a pre-clinical study, researchers found that administering 10-20 micrograms of CBD into specific regions of the brain increased wakefulness and inhibited slow-wave and REM sleep. CBD increased alpha brain waves, which boost alertness, and suppressed delta waves, which are needed for deep sleep.

This was only a pre-clinical study, but with methods that do not match real-life usage — no one injects cannabinoids right in their brains. Human patients have in fact reported that sleep can be improved by use of CBD-rich hemp extracts. Despite this,15mg of CBD appeared to raise alertness in a study that was with humans, as it improved “active and awake activity in the mind’.

On the other hand, a few other elements of hemp may aid sleep, like the terpene beta-myrcene. Linalool is another terpene that can have properties that effect sleep. Because of variations in each consumer, it’s important to find out when it comes to insomnia, what is ideal for you. CBD-rich hemp oil may help alone, in combination with other natural remedies and lifestyle changes, or not at all; everyone is different.

For now, someone saying definitively that it should always help may not be an accurate statement.   It’s been argued that much like marijuana use, the effect of CBD will vary depending on the person greatly.  Some folks report less motivation and energy when consuming such things, whereas others experience the opposite effect.

More studies will be needed, but you may want to try CBD for yourself as a legal way to test this out – if it helps you you may also be surprised about the other benefits CBD can offer.
